(Also see LinkedIn profile.) Mr. Hutchinson is a seasoned strategist and executive, with nearly two decades of experience working with large, global corporations and technology-centric start-up firms on world-class strategy problems. He works with senior management teams, using scenarios and other strategic planning techniques to help clients forge and implement dynamic, practical strategy.
His main focus is on “virtual goods” industries (i.e. financial services, IT services, and information 'content') where competitive dynamics, industry definitions, business models, business practices, and interfaces with customer are all shifting rapidly in light of galloping advances in network-based technology performance. He has also worked extensively in "hard goods" industries, where a range of technology developments continue to have a major impact on competitive dynamics and costs.
Before founding Cartegic Group, Art spent seven years at NerveWire, (formerly Northeast Consulting Resources: 'NCRI'), where he most recently headed the firm’s strategy practice for financial services. There he led a wide range of engagements for large corporate (Global 100) clients using the firm's scenario planning methodology: "Future Mapping". He also played an instrumental role in developing NCRI's "IT-Mapping" methodology, adapting proven approaches to scenarios and strategic planning, and applying them to developing business architecture and strategy informed by emerging information technology, while aligning IT investment priorities and architectures with evolving business requirements.
Art also helped advance NCRI's "Market Mapping" methodology via pioneering work he conducted in the information services sector.
Art is an active, founding member of the Digital Commerce Society of Boston (DCSB - started in 1995), as well as a charter member of the Digital Commerce Rights Management Group. He writes extensively on the interplay between business strategy and rapid technology evolution, and speaks and teaches at a range of industry events and symposia.
Prior to his tenure at NerveWire, Art was Director of Consulting Services at BIS Strategic Decisions (now Giga Group) - an information technology consulting firm - where he helped a range of IT product and service providers to develop effective marketing and distribution strategies and plans.
Before BIS, Art ran the Distribution Channels Information Service at International Data Corp. (IDC) - a pioneering and well-respected source for technology advice. There he helped over fifty computing and software vendor clients to develop and refine their competitive distribution channel and market access programs.
Mr. Hutchinson earned his BA from Williams College. He is a competitive endurance athlete, outdoorsman, and former ice/rock-climber.
